Diabetes in Ayurveda is dealt under Prameha. All types of Prameha terminate into Diabetes Mellitus (Madhumeha) in the absence of proper treatment. In Diabetes the patient passes urine which is as sweet as Honey and his body also becomes sweet. That is why Prameha endowed with these symptoms are called Madhumeha.
In Ayurveda, the main reason of Diabetes is believed to be Kapha dosha. When Kapha dosha gets aggravated and Oja flows out through urine, the condition is termed as Diabetes Mellitus. Usually Diabetes occurs during the old age when all the Dhatu (tissues) go on weakening day by day.
Acharya Charak and Sushruta had discovered the passing of sugar in urine due to excessive blood sugar. Acharya Sushruta describes the color of the urine of the diabetic as honey – like and Acharya Charaka examines the urine of a diabetic with ants.
“Madhuryachcha tanoratah evam makshikopasarpena sharira madhuryam.”
By just observing the color, ants and flies, they concluded the presence of sugar in urine and blood without performing any laboratory test.
